Frequently Asked Questions
An icon or rather a 'computer icon' is displayed to enhance navigation, understanding and user-experience in/on any kind of interface, system, object, machine or even location. Icons are everywhere! It is a symbol, a pictogram, a small image, an illustration, a glyph, graphic, design, visual language and most importantly it is a universal means of communication.
We will design icons just for you and will listen to your every design need and your wildest dreams. Needless to say custom icons absorb way more time than anything else. Factors like volume, sizes, effects and the type of icon license further determine the price. Should you plan on using the icons in a brand identity design you might be better off with an exclusive license. Total copyright buy-out is the ultimate option for those of you that are super serious and have huge plans. If you fill out the custom icon design form we will have sufficient details to draw up an accurate estimate for you.
With a non-exclusive license Dutch Icon reserves all rights to resell the icons to third parties. An exclusive (unlimited) license provides you with the exclusive right to use the icons for an indefinite period of time. Dutch Icon reserves all the copyrights, remains copyright holder and all terms of usage must be followed.
A total copyright buy-out means you obtain all copyrights from Dutch Icon, and become copyright holder. As opposed to an exclusive license you may do whatever you please with the icons; adapt the designs superficially as well as fundamentally you may even resell them.
Royalty-free refers to the right to use copyrighted material and intellectual property without having to pay royalties for usage - this does not mean public domain. You can use the icons in multiple projects if you like. We, the creator, retain copyright and all terms of usage must be followed when using our non-tranferable non-exclusive royalty-free (stock) icons.
You, as a person or company, can purchase a set to use on your computer. You are not allowed to sell or 'transfer the rights' to another person. When your company want the icons on more than 5 computers, you need to purchase an extended license. Please contact us for more information.

There is a lot of confusion surrounding icon and logo design. Icons and logos are not the same. Indeed they might look very similar but in no way do they require the same discipline, design process or end result. These days icons not only serve as application or interface icons but also as branding vocabulary. Logos may use icons as its visual brand language. A logo is a brands' identity whereas icons may be used in the identity design as a means of communication or navigation.
No, a logo needs to be unique and identifiable for a certain organisation. You might want to protect it or use it as a trademark. We own all rights of our stock icons, so you will not be able to claim any intellectual rights regarding your logo when you use an icon of Dutch Icon.
Sadly this is simply not feasible for different reasons but we hope it will some day. When you let us design at least 10 custom icons for you we could add separate icons from several stock icon sets if you like.
Pixel perfect is a guarantee against blurry edges once rescaling a vector. With regard to quality this is especially important for icons smaller then 64 x 64 pixels. We elaborate on the topic in this article.
Our Pika style is pixel perfect at multiples of 32 pixels, Gizmo is pixel perfect at multiples of 64 pixels. The Raw style is not designed to fit a rigid pixel grid though, in order to retain creative freedom, there were no concessions made in terms of technical limitations with this style. These icons have been created independently of any device or application. Although they look great on Retina Display.
If you are a company within the European Union and did not provide or do not have a VAT number, you can obtain the VAT (21% tax) refund from your taxing authority provided you are VAT exempt. We are unable to refund the VAT from a completed order. You might have noticed filling in a VAT number is required for EU members once you mark the field Company as 'Yes'. Please check 'No' and fill in your company address.
The nature of the products being digital and visual make them extremely sensitive to abuse, therefore we are not required by law to allow refunds for icon sets. Offering a refund would be like giving it away for free. For these reasons we have a simple no-nonsense refund policy and do not offer refunds of a purchase price to the purchaser. Faulty goods and purchases (due to system failure), however, are monitored and will be refunded.
