CASE STUDY
Dutch Government
What if there was one big library of icons which all the ministries and departments of the Dutch Government could use in their communication?
That was the exact question we asked ourselves before we decided to convince the people at the Dutch Government to let us custom design a distinctive icon style and ditto icon collection. ‘We’ is my good friend Rogier Rosema and yours truly: Hemmo de Jonge. Before we initiated this project we were already designing icons for the Government independently of each other. We soon came to realize there were a lot of other designers doing al these different icons in their own styles. Several meetings and presentations later it turned out there was a lot of demand for well designed icons within the Dutch Government. Our dream job became reality.

Icons in action
Although Dutchicon didn’t create any of the communication examples as shown below, it’s still fun to watch how people use the icons you have created. The biggest challenge we encountered was keeping the style consistent. We had to deal with dozens of people with all kinds of visions and opinions. To prevent time consuming discussions, we developed an icon styleguide as well.
